No Fields Found.Pressure the Legislature & Governor to Support Grad Students in the Final 2016 Budget
The 2016 budget is due to the Governor’s desk by June 15. The UC has requested $6M from the State to enroll 600 new graduate students in order to support graduate student success and meet the enrollment and instruction needs of incoming undergraduates. The CA Senate and Assembly have included the $6M in their budget, but we still need to advocate to the Governor to make this allocation happen.
Over the past few weeks, UCSA collected 90 letters from UC students to send to the Governor’s desk. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this action!
(The form to submit new letters is now closed.)

Here are our top priorities:
- $131 million dollars to support undergraduate and graduate students as the UC prepares to enroll 10,000 new students by 2020. This includes $125 million over the previous years budget to expand services and enrollment and an additional $6 million to enroll 600 new graduate students.
- AB 2017 (McCarty) will provide millions of dollars of California Proposition 63 money for mental health service grants on your campus. This will make progress towards shorter wait times, stronger diversity in counselors, and access to direct services.
- AB 1653 (Weber) focuses on campus climate by regularly providing policymakers and students with more information and data on the status of climates for everyone on a campus. Pick up your school newspaper, it hard find a day where something has negatively impacted campus climate, it’s time to turn that around! Healthy campuses for everyone, we think that’s a great thing.
- AB 1747 (Weber) makes important progress on a problem quietly affecting many students- not knowing where their next meal will come from, if they have one at all. From EBT options on campus to food pantries in student centers, this bill will allow students to focus on late night last minute study sessions, not worrying about going hungry.
Do you receive Cal-Grants?
Be sure you let lawmakers know how Cal-Grants are working for you. Worth ⅓ what they were in 2008, Cal Grants are failing to serve low-income students as UC tuition and costs of living are skyrocketing around the state. Sacramento needs to know what these grants mean to you, and why you demand and deserve more.
