H.O.P.E: SB 185 AND COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIAL AID REFORM

  • Comprehensive Financial Aid Reform.  UCSA is working to ensure that the financial aid appeals process, which allows students to provide and explain critical factors such as family expenses, is accessible, streamlined and standardized.

  • SB 185:  Diversity and Admissions. SB 185 (Hernandez) was a bill that would have authorized the UC and CSU to consider race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender and other relevant factors in admission.  Unfortunately, SB 185 was vetoed by Governor Brown.  Nonetheless, UCSA will work throughout the year to create a fairer, more holistic admissions process, and increase diversity of underrepresented groups.

VOTER REGISTRATION REFORM

  • Same Day Voter Registration and Online Voter Registration.  Same Day Voter Registration and Online Voter Registration will greatly increase student participation and access in the voting process.  UCSA is supporting legislation to have both of these reforms implemented in time for the 2012 elections.

  • Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) to Institutionalize Voter Registration Access on Campus.  Access to dorms and other institutional support is critical to ensuring high rates of voter registration and participation on our campuses.  UCSA is working on each campus to obtain a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure access and support for our voter registration efforts.
