UC Student Association Legislative Director Job Announcement

 UCSA is hiring a new Legislative Director to help lead our student advocacy in Sacramento. If you think you have what it takes to work for one of the most dynamic student led organizations in the United States then read the job description below and apply today!

Type: Full time, 40+ hours/week, occasional evenings and weekends. Minimum two-year commitment requested.

Salary:  Based on experience. 10% raise after first year.  

Benefits: Three weeks paid vacation, full health and dental, partial student loan repayment

Organization Description

The University of California Student Association is a coalition of student governments of ten UC campuses, representing over 210,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.  UCSA educates and organizes students around higher education issues and empowers students to advocate on their own behalf for the accessibility, affordability, and quality of the University of California system.

 

General Position Description

A management staff position, under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Legislative Director provides policy, administrative and program support to the UCSA Board of Directors regarding legislative issues of concern to current and potential students of higher education. The Legislative Director works in coordination with the Legislative Committee of the Board of Directors to develop and carry out campaign and legislative priorities.

 

Responsibilities:

Advocacy

  • Advocate adopted policy positions to the State Legislature and government agencies.
  • Work with, recruit, and develop coalition partners for statewide advocacy.

Research

  • Analyze, monitor and develop written materials on relevant legislation.
  • Perform special research assignments on legislation and legal cases as directed.
  • Research potential legislation to improve the affordability, access and quality of education at the UC.

Board Communication & Student Advocacy

  • Perform legislative and advocacy briefings and trainings for students. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Willingness to travel; work independently and for long hours.
  • Experience in grassroots legislative campaigns, especially on higher education policy.
  • Experience working with student organizations and diverse populations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation and analytical skills; Internet research skills & knowledge of media a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with legislative staffers, elected officials, administrators and coalition partners.
  • Commitment to UCSA’s mission and developing student leaders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Power Point).
